Learning a new language is the product of many years of studying, learning and practicing.
If you are trying to learn a new language in a short period of time, you may learn many things but we do not guarantee you will be fluent in the new language if you have no knowledge of it beforehand.
Everybody learns differently. Be patient and learn the new language step by step. Ultimately, you will discover your time and effort were well worth it.

A little about me
Hello everyone. My name is Veronika and I am from Slovakia. In this blog post I would like to tell you about my experience of studying English abroad especially an experience that I have from the USA. I have been there for studying English five times. And I’ve been studying English since the year 2016. Also, in that year it was my first time when I’ve made a decision to go to Miami and start study English. And so far my last time when I have been there was this year - 2020 and my stay there was from January to March. I was supposed to stay there until April, but unfortunately it wasn’t possible because of the situation with coronavirus.
When I first started study English I didn’t speak in this language at all and my level was the lowest one of the beginner levels to be specific it was level A1. But, my level what I have finished last time when I was studying English was one of the intermediate levels and specifically it is level B2. So as you can see studying English is not a fast process and it takes time. In my case it took four years to get from the beginner level to intermediate level. And it is not the end because I am going to continue studying and improving my English because I know that my English is so far from perfect and it's important to focus on learning a new language and also it's worth it.
The first time I decided to learn English in the USA
The best experience of learning and practicing my English that I have are experiences and adventures that I had in Miami. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made that I decided to study English abroad. I know I'll never regret it. My first time when I studied English in the U.S. was from September to October 2016. But, when I came there first time I wasn’t speak English at all.
An awkward experience at the airport
Let me tell you my story what I experienced when I arrived at the airport, so you will exactly know how bad my English was. Well, I was waiting for the passport control and U.S immigration check control for approximately two hours. But my story starts when I was finally speaking with Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBP Officer). First, I gave him my passport and ESTA approval so he could check them. (* ESTA - The Electronic System for Travel authorization. It is an automated system that determines the eligibility of visitors to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program. It allows citizens from participating countries to travel to the U.S. as non-immigrants. There are currently 39 countries that participate in the VWP). When he had checked all the documents then he asked me only one question, the question was ''how long will you stay in the United States of America?’’ But, I didn’t understand him. He asked me that question like five times, and I was just standing in front of him and looked at him without any words. When he realized that I didn't understand him at all afterwards he asked me if Slovak language is the right one that I speak in and I said yes. Right then he started to look for something on his computer and when he found it he wrote it at the paper. I was waiting maybe one minute. That paper was given to me by him and it was written there the question what he asked me but in Slovak language. I read it and I answered to his question. So, it was difficult but fortunately for me we understood each other at the end. I was very scared that he didn’t allow me enter USA because I didn’t speak in English at all. Really, I felt so bad and so dumb. But, I passed the passport control and an immigration check and finally I was able to have a wonderful time and study English in the United States of America.
My English classes
Well, let’s talk about English classes that I had. I had English classes with several teachers, so it’s for sure that I have some favorite teachers. And one of them is a teacher who taught me English during my first stay while I was studying English abroad. His name is Saul Albert Vargas. Also, I had more classes with him when I was back in Language school in the years 2018, 2019 and 2020. Actually, I had many classes with him and all of them were amazing.
My English classes with Albert (the founder of Alvademy)
The classes I’ve had with Albert were these ones: General English class (beginner level) in 2016, Grammar class (beginner) in 2018, General English class and Vocabulary class (beginner) in 2019, Communication class and Vocabulary class (intermediate level) in 2020. I loved all of them because I was so happy in those classes and my experiences there are great. I don’t have any bad experience.
Albert is an excellent teacher. His classes were always so funny and students learned so much with him. The classes wasn’t only about teacher. We were there like a family and everyone was willing to help when someone needed it. Also, we had so much fun in classes. I would like to explain how amazing it was, but it is not possible. Because you need to have your own experience.
Class Rules. Very Important!
Of course that we had certain rules which we had to follow in class. And it was good. I know that most people don’t like rules, but I do believe that rules are important and they can help us in our lives. And those rules were very simple, for example don’t disturbing class, don’t using phone in class (phone was allow only for class works), etc.
Some highlights of my English courses with Albert
In classes we worked together in a group with two or three people. But, one of the things I liked most was that students weren't allow to seat next to people who speak in the same or similar language and working with them. It was one of the most helpful things in learning and studying process because everyone had to speak only in English and it was so helpful for everyone.
Second thing what I liked was a quiz or a test that we had. I liked it because it gave me a clear picture what I already have been learning and also what I should improve and practice so I could study and practice it and know it better.
Really, those classes, experiences and adventures have given me a lot of positive and great things I am so thankful for.
Priceless friendships
I've met a lot of amazing people from all over the world. I really appreciate that I have great friends not only in Miami but also in Japan, Paraguay, Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, Kazakhstan, etc. I will be forever thankful for those people and that I have had opportunities to met them and being friend with them because they are amazing friends and people. And I am so thankful for all adventures that I experienced with my friends and also for those ones I will experience with them in the future. I know that I wouldn't have these people in my life if I weren’t decided to do something brave and go to U.S. and study English there.
My English is better now!
Also, my English is so much better than it was before. Four years ago I didn’t speak English at all, like I already said. But, I was brave enough to start study and making an effort. And now I can speak in English fluently and I understand other people and also other people understand me. It's very helpful when I travel, and now I can travel without any stress that I won’t understand people there. Now, I travel confidently without any worries and fears.
An experience I had when COVID-19 first started
I’d like to tell you a piece of my story which is about how important it is to speak English. For me it was very important and especially at that time I am about to mention.
When the coronavirus, COVID-19 outbreak has started in March, I have been in Miami at that time. But everything started when the president of the United States of America announced the travel ban on European Union and the countries belong to Schengen area (* currently, the Schengen area consists of 26 European countries: Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland). When this travel ban had started the many flights were cancelled by airlines companies. As I could see the situation was going worse and I knew that I need to leave U.S. as soon as possible even when I was supposed to stay in Miami three more weeks, but I had to leave sooner because it was necessary. Unfortunately, it wasn’t easy to leave America. I had three flights that were cancelled and I needed to communicate with airlines companies daily. And one of the things what was really good and helpful was that I can speak English so when I was talking to the customer supports I understood them and they understood me. It was really necessary to speak English at that time. And how did it turn out? Thank God and also people who were with me and supported me in this difficult time, I found right flights that were operating and I successfully reached Europe and Slovakia. :)
Learning a new language is step by step. Be patient!
Of course that my English is not perfect and I make lot of mistakes. But I‘ll continue learn English and I know that it will be even better. When one of my teachers once said me that I will be a good English speaker in the future I didn’t believe him at all and I was thinking that it will never happen. And now here we are, so he was right even when I didn’t believe what he said.
Studying a new language is not easy, it takes time and also it needs a motivation, enthusiasm and wanting to learn and study, but if you want it's worth it to start and do it.
Believe in yourself! You can do it!
If you thinking about learning a new language it’s good. Also, it's a first step to go and do it. Because everything starts with an idea and then the action follows. And your idea of starting to learn a new language is great. I know it because I exactly know what I am talking about, I have my own experience that I already told you.
Also, maybe your mind tells you that you can’t do it so you want to give up before you even start. But what your mind tells you is not true. Don’t believe that please. You need to get rid of those thoughts and feelings. Because you can do it! And I know it as a fact.
Now, you might think that I don’t understand you and those feelings. But I understand completely. Because I felt and was thinking exactly in the same way. I always doubted myself and I didn’t believe in myself. But it’s past because everything has changed since I got rid of my doubts and fears and when I’ve started to believe in myself and thinking about me in a positive way. And now I am so much happier and more determined. Also, I’m about to do those things that I was always thinking I can never achieve.
And I know that if I really want something and when I will make an effort then I can achieve it. And you can do it too. Because you are good and smart enough to go and fight for it.
Listen to me, if I and many other people could do it why you don’t? As Walt Disney once said ‘'If you can dream it, you can do it.’’
And as one wise person telling me often ''believe in yourself and you will achieve anything what you dream of'' and it’s truly true. Because if you believe anything is possible then anything is possible.
Take little steps and sooner or later you will be at the top of the staircase. So, if you want something let’s do it and never give up!
You deserve to experience how great time of learning a new language can be. So, If you thinking about learning a new language, don’t think about it anymore. Let’s start and do it.
Good luck! :)
